FAQ
I am looking for a therapist. What now?
Please reach out via phone, email, or the contact form to schedule an initial brief consultation. If we decide to proceed after speaking and the scheduling works out, we will meet for an intake session. The intake session is usually at least an hour long. We will review your personal history, the reasons for seeking therapy, what the treatment goals should be, and my practice policies. Should we determine that I am still the right fit for you, then we will schedule a regular session time.
How do I know if telemedicine is right for me?
We can discuss the telehealth option when we speak. For children, especially younger children, in-person is preferrable. Should we decide to proceed, I will provide a video orienting you to the telehealth process. All sessions are held via secure platforms – Spruce Health (https://spruce.care/073533361740) or Doxy.me (https://doxy.me/meandmyown).
What are sessions like?
When we first meet, regardless of the service, my main goal is to get to know you and to establish a working relationship, so that you can feel comfortable in the space. While I may ask a lot of questions in the beginning, there is no pressure to answer all of them. I meet you where you are emotionally. Then, once we identify your goals, I usually let you take the lead in what we discuss, using arising opportunities to pursue your goals more actively.
The process for child therapy or teen therapy is similar to that of individual therapy: I meet with the parent and child initially (whether together or separately) to gather information, establish a relationship, and identify the goals for treatment. Then, in subsequent sessions, I follow the child’s or teen’s lead in allowing the narrative/play to unfold. When a more direct approach is needed, as with an older child, then I am able to offer that as well – whatever will work best.
For parent and child sessions (dyadic therapy), I am there with you as you engage with your child to reflect on your experiences, to offer support, and to develop your confidence as a parent. In the process, I also subtly provide techniques for fostering child development.
Will you tell me what to do?
I typically take a non-directive approach in individual therapy and parent-child therapy. That means that I do not usually give advice, unless there is a safety issue. Instead, I work with you to help to make a decision.
For parent collateral sessions and parent consultations, however, I will offer strategies and resources for the purposes of problem solving.
Can you prescribe medication?
No, I cannot prescribe medication. In New York, psychologists are prohibited from prescribing. However, with your consent, I will work collaboratively with your medication management providers. A psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, or other medical doctor is needed.
How long is each session?
The initial intake appointment is usually one hour (60 minutes). The standard individual therapy sessions that follow, for children, teens, and adults, are 45 minutes. Parent collateral sessions are typically 45-50 minutes. Parent-child psychotherapy sessions and parent consultations are one hour (60 minutes).
Do you accept insurance?
No, I do not currently accept any insurance plans. However, I do provide detailed statements (Superbills) to assist with obtaining out-of-network reimbursement when there is eligibility.
To help find out whether you are eligible for reimbursement, I provide a list of questions to ask your insurance provider.
What are your fees?
The cost of the initial intake appointment (1 hour) is $275. Individual psychotherapy sessions (45 minutes) and parent collateral contact sessions (45 minutes) are $250. Parent consultations (1 hour) and parent-child psychotherapy sessions (1 hour) are $275.
Once we start, if you are not seeking insurance reimbursement, I will provide what is called a Good Faith estimate of the expected costs. For more information, please visit: https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
What is your cancellation policy?
All cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged the full session fee. Cancellations with advance notice can be rescheduled.
What happens if I am late to an appointment?
In the case of a late arrival, appointments will still end at the scheduled time. Occasionally, I am able to extend the session if I have the availability.
